Fine Arts
Art for the glory of god

We want our students to hone their skills in the area of fine arts. Growing in the areas of speech, music, and art will enable them to use their talents to serve their local churches for the glory of God. We encourage all students to participate in the annual North Carolina Christian School Association (NCCSA) competitions. Many place 1st in their category and represent our school in the national American Association of Christian Schools’ (AACS) competitions. We thank God for the abilities He has blessed our students with and also for blessing us with faculty and staff that help mold and develop these abilities for His honor.

Visual Arts

Through art, students can express their God-given creativity and use their imaginations as well as develop their fine motor skills. In our elementary art program the K5, 1st, and 2nd grades are introduced to the Elements of art, Principles of Design, and Masters in History on a three year rotation.  The third through sixth graders then build on that foundation exploring different mediums, categories and techniques of art.  The 3-6th graders also have a chance to compete with other schools in certain art categories!

In our secondary program, students have the opportunity to take art as an elective class.  Students are taught the basics of art theory and art composition while exploring different categories, techniques, and mediums in art. With each project the students are exposed to both historical and modern art masters in that field. The students also have an opportunity to compete in state and national art competitions.

Art is a reflection of God’s beauty, and an expression of the creativity God gave us as his image-bearers. Gen. 1:26-28.

Elementary Band

Elementary band is taught to our fifth and sixth-grade students with an emphasis on reading music. The students develop as musicians and are encouraged to perform to the best of their ability. Competition for chair positions and opportunities to perform at concerts and the annual fine arts competition aids the learning process.

Junior/Senior Band

Secondary band consists of seventh through twelfth graders. For state competition, they divide into junior high band (7-8) and senior high band (9-12). Concerts in the fall and spring as well as North Carolina Christian School Association (NCCSA) state competitions are offered to train students for future ministry service. In addition, the senior high band participates in the annual Bob Jones University Fine Arts Festival and the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS) National Bible, Academic, and Fine Arts competitions. Matthews Christian Academy has had numerous state, festival, and national fine arts competition winners in both band and various ensembles.

Choir

Junior/senior High

All students are taught the fundamentals of singing, posture, breathing, musicianship, and sight-singing. Concerts in the fall and the spring along with state competition are offered to aid the learning process. The senior high choir takes part in the annual Bob Jones University Fine Arts Festival and the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS) National Bible, Academic, and Fine Arts competitions. The school has had numerous state festival and national fine arts competition winners in both choir and various ensembles. Private voice lessons are also offered.

Handbells

all levels

We teach proper ringing, marting, malleting, and plunking techniques. Teamwork and diligence are emphasized as the most important qualities a handbell choir can possess. The handbell choirs have participated successfully in state and national competitions with a mixed repertoire of sacred and secular music.

Speech

all levels

Students have a variety of opportunities for class presentations, projects, and speeches in our English and Social Studies programs.
